Abstract

Charles Mitchener Dodd, professor and ceramic engineer, attended Hiram College (1914-1916) and received his B.S. (1926) and Ceramic Engineering Degree (1933) from Ohio State University. He served as a Professor of ceramic engineering at the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy before accepting the position of Professor and Head of ceramic engineering at Iowa State College (University). Dodd's area of expertise was in structural clay products, refractories, and ceramic equipment and plant design. This collection contains biographical materials, correspondence, memoranda, writings, class notes, reports, drawings, and slides. The materials document Dodd's student years and his professional career which was dedicated to teaching about and researching the North American ceramics and tile industry.

Biographical note

Charles Mitchener Dodd was born to Overton L. and Martha E. (Mitchener) Dodd on August 13, 1895 in New Philadelphia, Ohio. He attended Hiram College (1914-1916) in Hiram, Ohio, but received his B.S. (1926) in ceramic engineering and his professional Ceramic Engineer Degree (1933) from Ohio State University.

Dodd enlisted (1917) in the United States Army Medical Corps at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He then transferred (1918) to the Sergeant Company E, 33rd Engineers. He served one year in France and was discharged July 9, 1919.

Upon his return, Dodd was employed as a construction engineer (1920) on the Harrop Tunnel Kiln for the Eljer Company in Ford City, Pennsylvania. He also helped with his father's dry goods business in New Philadelphia, Ohio (1920-1925); was the head fireman (1926) at the Canton Brick Company, Midvale, Ohio; and Assistant Ceramic Engineer (1927) at Robinson Clay Product Company in Parral, Ohio.

Dodd began his teaching career at the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy as an Assistant Professor (1927-1928) of Ceramic Engineering. He was promoted to Associate Professor (1928-1935) and served as Acting Head (1932-1935) of the Ceramic Engineering Department. He was made Professor of Ceramic Engineering and Head of the Department (1935-1939). He accepted a position at Iowa State College (University) as Professor and Head of the Ceramic Engineering Department (1939-1961). During his time at Iowa State he became the Acting Engineering Personnel Officer (1942-1945) and director of the Educational Coordinator Navy V-12 Program at Iowa State (1943-1945).

Dodd's main research interests were in structural clay products, refractories, and ceramic equipment and plant design. He conducted several research projects for the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station, the Structural Clay Products Institute, and the National Brick Manufacturers Association. He authored a number of articles on ceramic engineering and clay products and offered his services as a consultant to the clay, brick, and tile industries.

Dodd married Marian Charlotte Lieser in 1921. They had two children, Charlotte Jane and Charles M., Jr. Charles M. Dodd passed away on March 22, 1984.

Collection description

The collection (1916-1982, undated) contains biographical materials, correspondence, coursework, drawings, lecture notes, memoranda, publications, reports, and slides. The correspondence files contain letters to and from former students, colleagues, and individuals in the ceramics industry. The coursework and drawings include materials related to his time as a student. Dodd's lecture notes contain detailed information about the ceramics manufacturing from years of teaching at both Iowa State and at the University of Missouri. The collection also contains reports completed by Dodd, many of them produced for industry regarding firing behaviors of clays. Other publications and reports in the collection cover various aspects of the ceramics and tile industry including quality control, raw materials research, and firing behavior investigations.
