Abstract

The Geotechnical Research Laboratory, originally named the Soil Research Laboratory, was established in 1949 as part of the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station (Engineering Research Institute). Researchers in the laboratory study soil stabilization, soil and rock mechanics, concrete, and asphalt. This collection includes reports and papers authored by members of the research staff of the Geotechnical Research Laboratory. The primary research topics covered in these reports include soil stabilization, studies of the loess soils of Iowa, and research into roadway surfaces paved with concrete, cement, asphalt, and gravel.

 

Historical note

The Engineering Research Institute (ERI) is the research arm of the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. Current research is focused on several key areas including biosciences and engineering, energy sciences and technology, critical infrastructure, information and decision sciences, and sustainability. Many of the research projects are interdisciplinary in nature and researchers come from a variety of academic departments and backgrounds and are affiliated with numerous campus centers and institutes including Ames Laboratory.

Established in 1904 as the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station, ERI shares the distinction of being the first engineering experiment station in the country alongside one created in Illinois at the same time. Early research was divided into two lines of work: tests of material and products (including analyses of water, sewage, manufactured goods, and construction materials at the request of state and local governments and private industries) and investigations along technical lines (including research into areas important to the manufacturing, municipal, transportation, drainage engineering, materials of construction and other technical industries and interests of Iowa). The name was changed to the Engineering Research Institute in 1966.

Research into soil stabilization resulted from investigations into roadway construction. In 1950, the Iowa Highway Commission, in coordination with the Engineering Experiment State, started funding a substantial research project into the loess and glacial till soils of Iowa. The study was undertaken by researchers at the Soil Research Laboratory which was established in 1949 under the direction of Donald T. Davidson. The Soil Research Laboratory was renamed the Geotechnical Research Laboratory and in 1986 was named for Iowa State Engineering Professor Merlin G. Spangler.

 

Collection description

This collection (1950-1985) includes research reports and studies written by faculty and staff of the Geotechnical Research Laboratory of the Iowa State University Engineering Research Institute. The collection includes both published and unpublished works as well as papers prepared for presentation at various conferences. The primary research topics covered in these reports include soil stabilization for roadbeds; studies of the loess soils of Western Iowa; and research into roadway surfaces paved with concrete, cement, asphalt, and gravel. Most of these projects were sponsored by the Iowa Highway Research Board. During the 1950s, the Office of Naval Research, U.S. Navy, also sponsored a series of studies into the development of roadways in Alaska.

The reports were written by many authors, though most of them were faculty members of Iowa State's Civil Engineering Department. The authors whose works appear most frequently in these reports include Donald T. Davidson, Richard L. Handy, James M. Hoover, and Turgut Demirel. Many of the research projects were sponsored by government agencies including the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and the Iowa Highway Research Board, Iowa State Highway Commission.

Some of the writings in this collection are photocopies from published journal articles and other reports may be duplicated in the collection of Engineering Research Institute Reports (RS 11/2/0/6) also located in the University Archives.
