Abstract

John C. Tannehill was a professor of aerospace engineering at Iowa State University from 1969 until 2005. His primary research focus was on computational fluid dynamics, supersonic and hypersonic flows, space flight trajectories, and rocket propulsion. He also served as the manager of the Computational Fluid Dynamics Center at Iowa State. This collection includes biographical information about Tannehill along with many of his published works including book chapters, journal articles, and research reports.

Biographical note

John Charles Tannehill was born to John Bell and Pearl Hanna (Trulin) Tannehill on October 14, 1943, in Salem, Illinois and attended Boone High School in Boone, Iowa. He enrolled at Iowa State University where he received his B.S. (1965) and M.S (1967) in aerospace engineering, and two Ph.D.'s (1969) in aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering.

During his professional career Tannehill spent time working for both public and private enterprises. He was an Aerospace Engineer (Summer 1965) at the NASA Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. He was a Technical Staff Member (Summer 1968) at Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California. After graduating with his Ph.D., he was hired by Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1969-1974) of aerospace engineering. He participated in a NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (Summers 1970 and 1971) at the NASA-Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, and Stanford University. At Iowa State, he was promoted to Associate Professor (1974-1979) and Professor (1979-2005) of aerospace engineering. He was then named Emeritus Professor (2006-2012). In addition to his teaching duties, Tannehill served as President (1984-2012) of Engineering Analysis, Inc. in Ames, Iowa, and was the manager (1984-2012) of the Computational Fluid Dynamics Center at Iowa State University.

Tannehill’s main research areas include computational fluid dynamics, supersonic and hypersonic flows, space flight trajectories, and rocket propulsion. He is coauthor, with Dale A. Anderson and Richard H. Pletcher, of the book Computational Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer (call no. QA901 .A53 1984, second edition QA901 .A53 1997). He wrote "Hyperbolic and Hyperbolic-Parabolic Systems," Chapter 12 of Handbook of Numerical Heat Transfer (call no. QC320 .H235 1988). For his years of dedicated work Tannehill was honored with the Faculty Citation (1990) from Iowa State. He also received the David R. Boylan Eminent Faculty Award for Research (2004).

Tannehill was involved in many local and professional organizations. At Iowa State he was a member of Sigma Gamma Tau (aerospace engineering honorary), Tau Beta Pi (engineering honorary), and Sigma Xi (research honorary). Professional associations he belonged to include the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, to which he was named a Fellow (1993), and the American Society of Engineering Education.

Tannehill married Marcia George of Boone, Iowa. They have two children, Michelle and John J.

Collection description

This collection (1965-[ongoing]) includes biographical information, a book chapter, journal articles, published articles in conference proceedings, and reports related to Tannehill’s tenure with the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State.

The writings document Tannehill’s research in supersonic and hypersonic flows, space flight trajectories, and rocket propulsion. However, he is best known for his work in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in which he developed algorithms and applied them to physical phenomena and design improvement. CFD was a common topic in his writings, and he received many grants for his research.

Tannehill’s journal articles were mainly published in the AIAA Journal, Computational Fluid Dynamics Journal, and the Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer. His proceeding articles were commonly presented at the annual AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, and the Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference. The reports he coauthored were mostly for NASA contracts and grants.
