Abstract

Maurice A. Larson was a professor and administrator in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State University. He received his B.S. (1951) and Ph.D. (1958) in chemical engineering from Iowa State and began his professional career at the school as a graduate assistant in the 1950s. Larson retired in 1997 as a Distinguished Professor. Larson conducted research on crystallization from solution and his work resulted in the development of new designs for industrial crystallizers. This collection contains faculty vita, laboratory record books, news clippings, press releases, and publications. The laboratory record books contain notes related to experiments Larson conducted on fused phosphates and crystallization. The publications include preprints of Larson's papers on crystallization and nucleation.

Biographical note

Maurice A. Larson was born July 19, 1927, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He received his B.S. (1951) and his Ph.D. (1958) in chemical engineering from Iowa State College (University).

Larson began his career at Iowa State as a Graduate Assistant (1954-1955) in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He worked his way up through the ranks as he was promoted to Instructor (1955-1958), Assistant Professor (1958-1961), Associate Professor (1961-1964), and Professor (1964-1997). Larson was named Distinguished Professor (1977) and also served as Chair (1978-1983) of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Larson was an expert in the field of crystallization from solution and his work resulted in the development of new designs for industrial crystallizers. He co-authored the book Theory of Particulate Processes (call no. TP156.C7 R3) with A. D. Randolph. Larson was the recipient of many awards including Faculty Citation (1977) from the ISU Alumni Association, the Governor's Science Medal (1989), and the D. R. Boylan Eminent Faculty Award (1990). Larson was also named a Fellow (1982) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering.

Larson married Ruth E. Gugeler of Burlington and together they had three children: Richard Alan, Janet Ann, and John Albert. Maurice Larson died on October 1, 1999.
