Abstract

The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University has its roots in general engineering courses that were initiated at the school in 1905. In 1926, courses in industrial engineering were added to the curriculum. The department's current name was adopted in 1989. The records included in this collection include notes, minutes, agendas, member lists, meeting and informational materials relating to the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Industry Advisory Council.

Historical note

Courses in mechanic arts have been taught at Iowa State since students first arrived in 1869. Engineering instruction was organized under the Division of Engineering in 1904 and general courses in engineering were initiated in 1905. In 1926, the Department of General Engineering was established and early courses in industrial engineering were offered. The option to formally pursue a course of study in industrial engineering was offered 1945. A cooperative program was established in 1951 which offered students the option to pursue a B.S. in General Engineering and a law degree from a recognized law school. The name was changed to the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1956. In 1989, the name was changed to its current name, the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE).
