Biographical note
Joan E. Herwig received a B.S. (1965) from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Home Economics Education, an M.S. (1971) from Iowa State University in Child Development, and a Ph.D. (1978) Purdue University in Child Development. Herwig has been employed by the Department of Child Development at Iowa State University as an Instructor (1971-1978), as an Assistant Professor (1978-1982), and as an Associate Professor (1982-2003). She is now retired. She served as Child Development Chairperson (1983-1986), and has served as Director of the Child Development Laboratory School (1993-2003). Dr. Herwig's major field of research is the play of young children in the context of the learning environment both indoors and outdoors; influences of kindergarten, preschools and public school programs; and effects of teaching strategies on young children's learning. |
Collection description
This collection (1971-2012, undated) contains biographical information including a curriculum vita and news clippings, correspondence, course information, department papers, publications in the Child Development subject area, and records of several conferences including the Midwest Association for the Education of Young Children (MAEYC). The MAEYC records contain procedural and historical notebooks compiled by Herwig during the time she served on the executive committee for the organization (1981-1993); and the MAEYC Council Members Handbook edition 1, 1990 and MAEYC Council Members Handbook edition 2, 1991. |
