Abstract

Sue R. Crull was a professor of human development and family studies at Iowa State University. She received her educational training at the University of Illinois and Iowa State University. In between teaching assignments at Iowa State, Crull served on the faculty of Western Michigan University where she also served as Associate Director (1990-1995) of the Kercher Center for Social Research. She returned to Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor in 1995 and retired in 2007. Crull researched issues related to housing and rural development and taught courses on housing finance, homeowner education, and housing for special needs. This collection contains personal data, notes and handouts from courses taught by Crull, research notes and proposals, proceedings of conferences, and other information relating to Crull's work in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

 

Biographical note

Sue Crull earned a B.S. (1963) in Home Economics Education from the University of Illinois, an M.S. (1968) in Family Economics from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. (1979) in Family Environment and Sociology from Iowa State University. She started her career as a high school teacher in Newark, Illinois, and then served as the Assistant to the Dean of Women at the University of Illinois.

After receiving her Ph.D., Crull taught at Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor (1979-1988) then took a position as a Research Consultant (1988-1989) at Western Michigan University's Kercher Center for Social Research. She was soon promoted to Associate Director (1990-1995) of the Kercher Center. In 1995, she returned to Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor (1995-2001) in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and was promoted to Associate Professor (2001-2007). She retired from Iowa State University in 2007 and was named Associate Professor Emeritus.

Crull took part in many research projects and taught classes dealing with housing and rural development. She helped conduct and analyze several surveys of rural Iowa and of housing options in rural areas.

Crull was also a very active teacher, using technology in the classroom in innovative ways. She pioneered the use of WebCT in HDFS (Human Development and Family Studies) classrooms and was active in initiatives to introduce technology to the classroom. She taught many courses throughout her career in housing finance, homeowner education, and housing for special needs. Crull received several teaching awards, including the Louis Thompson Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award (2002), the Family and Consumer Sciences College Career Teaching Award (2005), and the VEISHEA Faculty of the Year Award, College of Human Sciences (2006).

 

Collection description

The collection (1976-2011) contains personal data, notes and handouts from courses taught by Crull, research notes and proposals, proceedings of conferences, and other information relating to Crull's work in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. Most of the materials relate to Crull's research and teaching interests in housing and rural development including family finance and the relationships between housing and rural economic vitality. Other materials include information on student projects, committees and advising responsibilities, portfolios from the tenure process, and surveys on Iowa's families.

In addition, each folder contains a reflection written by Crull on her thoughts and feelings about her teaching, research projects, and awards received.
