Abstract

Harold V. Gaskill was born in Fayette County, Ohio, on February 3, 1905. He joined the faculty at Iowa State College (University) as an assistant professor of psychology in 1930 and served as Dean of the Division of Science and Director of Industrial Science Research from 1938-1955. Gaskill also served as a scientist in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S Army Reserve. The collection contains administrative files related to his work as Dean and as liaison to the Cooperative Study in General Education, an American Council on Education group, as well as a small amount of biographical information and published articles.

 

Biographical note

Harold V. Gaskill was born in Fayette County, Ohio, on February 3, 1905. He received his B.A. in chemistry and anatomy (1926), M.A. in psychology (1927), and Ph.D. in psychology (1930) from Ohio State University. Gaskill joined Iowa State's staff as an assistant professor of psychology (1930-1931), later achieving the ranks of associate professor (1931) and professor (1934). He served as Dean of the Division of Science and Director of Industrial Science Research at Iowa State University from 1938-1955. His textbook, Personality, was published in 1936. Along with Dean of Personnel M.D. Helser, Gaskill served as Iowa State's liaison to the Cooperative Study in General Education, a group within the American Council on Education.

Iowa State granted Gaskill an administrative leave in 1951 to serve for nearly two years in Washington, D.C., as Chief Scientist in the U.S. Army and deputy for Research and Development in the Army's Office of the Chief of Staff. In 1954 he achieved the rank of Brigadier General in the Army Reserve. Gaskill returned to Ames in 1954 before retiring in 1955 to become Vice President of Planning for the Collins Radio Company. Gaskill and his wife Pauline were married in Columbus, Ohio, in 1930 and together had three children: Harold V., Jr., Jane, and Charles. Gaskill died on April 19, 1975, in West Germany.

The collection (1928-1983, undated) contains administrative files related to his work as Dean and as liaison to the Cooperative Study in General Education, a group within the American Council on Education, as well as a small amount of biographical information and published articles. Material types include architectural drawings, articles and publications, correspondence, memorandums, newsletters, pamphlets, photographs, reports, and speeches.
