Biographical note

Music courses were first offered at Iowa State Agricultural College (University) in 1869. The Department of Vocal and Instrumental Music was formally established in 1870. However, music was not a regular study in the college curriculum and had only a semi-official relation to the college. The department was supported almost entirely by tuition fees from students taking private lessons. The name was officially changed to the Department of Music in 1889 and the department first offered a four year course of study in the 1904-1905 academic year. In 1975, some courses were opened for minor credit.

The ISU Cyclone Football "Varsity" Marching Band rehearses throughout fall semester and is open to all students regardless of major. The approximately 300 student members receive academic credit, but no financial incentive. The band performs at Iowa State University home football games, at post-season bowl games, and occasionally in concert or for alumni and fan events sponsored by the University.
