Biographical note

Victor E. Nelson was born to Peter and Christina Nelson on January 21, 1888, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Professor Nelson received his B.S. (1912) and M.S. (1914) from the University of Wisconsin. He served as Instructor (1914-1917) in agricultural chemistry at the University of Wisconsin before being hired at The Johns Hopkins University as an Associate (1917-1919) in the School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Professor Nelson was hired at Iowa State College (University) as Assistant Professor (1919) in the Department of Chemistry. He was promoted to Associate Professor (1920) and Professor (1923). He resigned in 1944.

Professor Nelson's primary research interests were in chemical physiology and nutrition in humans. He headed the teaching of physiological chemistry courses at Iowa State and his research included the study of fluorine content in water and the role played by other vitamins and minerals in the diet of humans and animals.

He married Katherine Diana Johnson on June 16, 1917. They had no children and Katherine died in 1939. Professor Nelson later married Estella Drenning Kerr of New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 11, 1950. He passed away on May 17, 1954 in Miami, Florida, and was buried near Stoughton, Wisconsin.
