Biographical note

James R. Prescott was born February 9, 1935, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He completed his B.A. (1957) at the University of California at Berkeley and earned both his M.A. (1960) and Ph.D. (1964) from Harvard University. During his time as a student at Harvard, Prescott was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, an Amelia Earhart Fellow, and an I.B.M. Fellow.

Before coming to Iowa State University, Prescott worked as a teaching fellow in the computation center at Harvard University (1961-1962). He accepted a position as an Instructor (1963-1964) in the Department of Economics at Iowa State. Prescott was promoted to Assistant Professor (1964-1967), Associate Professor (1967-1971), and Professor (1971-1995). He retired in 1995 at which time he was named Professor Emeritus.

Prescott traveled around the country and the world as a visiting professor and consultant. Some of the universities he visited include Washington University (1965), UCLA (1969), Utah State University (1973, 1981), and the University of Valladolid in Spain (1992). Prescott served as a consultant (1979-1980) for the joint ISU-United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project on rural services in Guatemala City. Prescott was also a consultant for an economic planning project in Cairo, Egypt (1980-1981) and for a joint ISU-Zambia project concerning regional and natural resource economics (1983).

Prescott has been a member of the American Economics Association, the Econometric Society, the National Tax Association, Phi Eta Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa, serving as the organization's president (1980-1981). Also, he was awarded the Wilton Park International Service Award (1987) by the British government.

Prescott is married to Jermaine Conkin, a graduate of Drake University, and has one son named Scott.

 

Collection description

This collection (1965-2007, n.d.) contains biographical information on James Prescott and reports and other published works he authored on urban-regional economics, rural economic development, and government subsidized housing and agricultural programs. Some of the papers are a result of consulting work he did, such as reports on the Minnesota experimental city project and an economic development plan for Tehran, Iran.
