Abstract

Charles W. Meyer (1957-2009) was a Professor of Economics at Iowa State University (1968-1998). During his time at Iowa State, Meyer chaired numerous committees and received the Iowa Regents Faculty Award (1994). Meyer’s main research areas were the economics of taxation, Social Security programs, and disability insurance. This collection contains biographical information, correspondence, exams from the courses he taught, and copies of several published works, including book reviews and articles.

 

Biographical note

Charles W. Meyer was born March 15, 1932, in Joliet, Illinois. He received his B.A. (1954) and M.A. (1955) in economics from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. (1961) from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to furthering his education at Johns Hopkins University, Meyer served in the United States Army (1955-1958).

Meyer accepted a position as an Assistant Professor (1961-1964) at Iowa State University. He was later promoted to Associate Professor (1964-1967) and Professor (1968-1998). Meyer was also a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin's Institute for Research on Poverty (1968-1969) and the Center for Health Economics and Law (1988-1989). He also served as an Economist (1973-1974) for the U.S. Social Security Administration's Office of Research and Statistics.

Meyer's research areas were the economics of taxation, Social Security, and disability insurance. He wrote several articles and three books on these subjects. Meyer also co-authored a textbook for undergraduates in economics, Principles of Public Finance,with J. Ronnie Davis in 1983. He remained active in several research groups including the Governor's Study of Tax Structure (1966) and Iowa Legislative Tax Study Committee (1970-1971; 1972-1973).

Meyer served on numerous university committees, including chairing the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors Program Committee. He received the Iowa Regents Faculty Award (1994).

Meyer married Donnelle Sedgley in 1964; they had one son, Demian Bourne.

 

Collection description

The collection (1957-2009, undated) contains biographical information, correspondence, course exams, and writings. The writings include a book review regarding Bruno Stein's On Relief: the Economics of Poverty and Public Welfare and papers on taxation and externalities.
