Abstract

H. Scott Hurd was a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University and served as Senior Epidemiologist in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine. He was an expert in the epidemiology and ecology of foodborne pathogens found in livestock. This collection contains biographical information, certificates, research articles, and a report on Canadian livestock health risks he helped author.

 

Biographical note

Howard Scott Hurd was born on February 18, 1956. He received his D.V.M. (1982) from Iowa State University. He was later hired by Iowa State where he served as Associate Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine and was Senior Epidemiologist in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.

Hurd was an expert in the epidemiology and ecology of foodborne pathogens found in livestock. He performed extensive research on food risks and food safety and his research interests included antimicrobial resistance, bioterrorism, and emerging infectious diseases. He was elected in 2008 as Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety of the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he implemented the largest meat recall in history. He was also a member of the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Risk Assessment and the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents.  

Hurd married Susan Van Houweling in 1976 and together they had eight children. Hurd died on March 27, 2014.

 

Collection description

This collection (1988-2012, undated) contains biographical information, certificates, writings on food safety and livestock health. These writings includes the report Healthy Animals, Healthy Canada: The Expert Panel on Approaches to Animal Health Risk Assessment which Hurd helped write as a member the expert panel.
