Abstract

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University was created in 1991 as the result of the merger of the Departments of Food and Nutrition in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and Food Technology in the College of Agriculture. The department was administered jointly by the two colleges until 2005 when it was incorporated into the newly created College of Human Sciences. The department offers courses in consumer food science, dietetics, food science and technology, and nutritional science. The collection contains correspondence, curriculum information, faculty meeting information, minutes, proposals, reports, and files related to the merger of the two departments that formed the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

 

Historical note

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition was created in 1991 as the result of the merger of the Departments of Food and Nutrition in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and Food Technology in the College of Agriculture. The merged department is jointly administered by both colleges. All curricula are available to students in either college. The department offers courses in consumer food science, dietetics, food science and technology, and nutritional science. The department became part of the College of Human Sciences when it was created by the merger of the College of Education and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences in 2005.

The focus of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is to enhance human health and quality of life through education, research and outreach in food and nutrition sciences. Three research centers associated with Food Science and Human Nutrition research activities include: Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR), Center for Research and Botanical Dietary Supplements, and Nutrition and Wellness Research Center.
