Biographical note

Junior Eugene Ellis was born February 6, 1917. He lived near Dexter in Dallas County, Iowa. He joined 4-H as a member of the Union's Pride 4-H Club where he completed projects related to pigs, lambs, and corn. He was one of the Iowa representatives to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago (1935-1937). He and his brother, Lawrence, gave a demonstration of "The Construction of Farm Buildings" and won their division at the Iowa State Fair (1936). They were awarded a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago and were invited to the American Zinc Institute annual meeting (1937) in St. Louis to compete for national demonstration champion, which they won.

Ellis earned his B.S. (1941) in animal husbandry from Iowa State College (University). As a student, he was a member of Block and Bridle and the vice president (1941) of the Westminster Fellowship group at the Collegiate Presbyterian Church. After graduating, he was the County Club Agent (1941-1942) in Clinton County. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in WWII. Later, he was the County Extension Director (1947-1950) in Sioux County.

Ellis passed away on December 14, 2011.

Collection description

This collection (1929-1946, undated) contains 4-H records of Junior Eugene Ellis, including artifacts, biographical information, certificates, correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, and record books. Biographical information includes newspaper clippings regarding his 4-H, Block and Bridle, and Collegiate Presbyterian Church activities.

Ellis' 4-H record books showcase the kind of records kept by 4-H members and document the activities and events Ellis participated in as a 4-H member. His record books contain essays about his club work, summaries of his 4-H activities, programs from local 4-H meetings, club rules, letters of recommendation, and photographs of 4-H events.

The three trips Ellis made to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago are well documented. Ellis collected programs and souvenirs from various businesses the delegates toured: Armour and Company, International Harvester Company, the National Live Stock Marketing Association, Swift and Company, and Wilson and Company. Maps, notes, postcards, stickers, and tickets from his trips are also included.

The collection also contains artifacts related to Ellis' 4-H activities and his career as a County Extension Director. Artifacts from Ellis' trip to the National 4-H Club Congress include a beanie, stocking hats, flashlights from International Harvester Company, name tags, and medals. Other 4-H artifacts include medals from the Iowa State Fair and Dallas County Fair, plus Dallas County Fair ribbons. Name placards are included from his time as a County Extension Director.
