Biographical note
Harold Maxwell Nichols was born December 30, 1894. He received his B.S. (1918) from Iowa State College (University) in animal science. While at Iowa State, Nichols was a member of the International Livestock Judging Team. During World War I, Nichols served with the Army Medical Corps as a bacteriologist. After the war, Nichols worked for the Iowa Extension Service in Allamakee, Hamilton, and Humboldt counties. Nichols also served as president of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. He moved to Texas in 1947, where he completed his career in Extension service. Nichols passed away on April 5, 1988. |
Collection description
This collection (1915-1974) contains photographs, manuscripts, and correspondence. The Iowa Extension material details Nichols' work in Allamakee, Hamilton, and Humboldt counties. The manuscripts cover reminiscences of his work as well as photographs from those counties in the 1920s and 1930s. Other materials include photographs and reminiscences of Iowa State and World War I and copies of The Iowa Agriculturalist from 1915 and The Iowa Veterinarian from 1930 and 1932. The veterinary publications used photographs related to hogs that were taken by Nichols. The collection also contains photographs and information from the 1947 National Plowing Contest held on the Ralph Olsen farm in Hamilton County, Iowa. |
