Biographical note

Janis Finley Stone was born in Olney, Illinois on July 22, 1938. She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana where she earned a B.S. (1959) in vocational home economics education, an M.S. (1963) in home economics with a specialization in textiles and clothing, and a Ph.D. (1978) in family and consumption economics. In 1979, she joined the faculty of Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor (1979-1985) in the Department of Textiles and Clothing. Stone was promoted to Associate Professor (1985-1991) and Professor (1991-2003) and was named Professor Emerita upon her retirement in 2003.

Throughout her career, Stone's research focused on the special clothing needs of the disabled and elderly and consumer attitudes regarding textiles. She also conducted research on protective clothing for pesticide and sun safety, and the management of solid and hazardous wastes. In addition to her many academic publications, Stone worked with the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service as a textiles and clothing specialist. She produced several popular publications regarding clothing and farm safety, solid waste disposal, and the washing and care of textiles, as well as guides to making good consumer choices about clothing and clothing care products. She wrote these publications for both adult and 4-H audiences. Stone also designed seminars and produced several slide shows, video presentations, and visual displays to assist Extension personnel in teaching those topics. In 1999, Stone was awarded the Bobbin Educator of the Year Award (an award granted annually by the International Textile and Apparel Association, an association of college and university educators in the field of textiles and clothing) for her work with the Extension Service.

Stone also engaged in many professional activities, including work on several newsletters and the creation of the Midwest Textile and Apparel Industry Directory (1999), in cooperation with faculty in Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas and North Dakota. The directory included information on how to reach more than 425 textile, apparel and sewn products firms that have either plants or headquarters in the Midwest.

Stone married Kenneth Stone, a Professor of Economics at Iowa State University. They had two children, Eric and James.
