Historical note

In 1969, Warren and Dorothy Langwith donated a tract of 93 acres of timber covered land in Louisa County, Iowa, to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Their intention was for the Foundation to create a camping center to be utilized by the Davenport Extension Area 4-H and for youth in southeast Iowa. The Foundation supplied funds to provide for a manmade pond (1977), an A-frame cabin (1979), and the hiring of the first summer programmer, Curtis Henderson (1982). The Louisa County Conservation Board purchased the land in 2000 and named it the Langwood Education Center and Camp.

Collection description

The collection (1969-2000) provides a chronological record of the Langwood 4-H Reserve with documents that include correspondence, land deeds, meeting minutes, news clippings, photographs, slides, and reports. The records cover and include the initial gift of land from the Langwiths to the sale of the land to the Louisa County Conservation Board. Correspondence is primarily between the area extension director in charge of Langwood and the Iowa 4-H Foundation staff in Ames. Reports can include annual reports, committee reports, and financial reports.

Related collections include the Iowa 4-H Foundation Administrative Records (RS 16/3/7/4) and the Iowa 4-H Records (RS 16/3/4).
