Abstract

The Ames Laboratory began as a chemical research and development program at Iowa State College (University) to assist the World War II Manhattan Project. The Ames Project developed an entirely new technology for the conversion of uranium ore to high-purity uranium metal and then used that technology to produce more than 2 million pounds between 1942 and 1946. In 1947, the United States Atomic Energy Commission officially established the Ames Laboratory as a national laboratory. The collection contains annual summary reports, clippings, correspondence, directories, financial reports, memorandums, minutes, newsletters, pamphlets, personnel files, photographs, press releases, programs, publications, research reports, scientific papers, and speeches. The collection documents the contribution of Ames scientists to the Manhattan Project and the continuing research work of the Ames Laboratory, particularly in the fields of metallurgy and materials chemistry.

Historical note

Ames Laboratory had its beginnings in the Ames Project, a top secret chemical research and development program at Iowa State College (University) supporting the World War II Manhattan Project. The Ames Project was started by Frank H. Spedding, Professor of Chemistry, who had been appointed by Arthur Compton as head of the Chemistry Division of the Manhattan Project's Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. Instead of waiting for a laboratory to be built in Chicago, Spedding got a staff in place from among his graduate students in Ames, appointed professor of chemistry Harley Wilhelm as Associate Director, and got started doing research right away. The work of the Ames Project was thus performed under the auspices of the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory.

Scientists in Chicago were working on a nuclear chain reaction experiment that required quantities of pure uranium in the tons; at the time, however, it was commercially available only in gram-quantities. Therefore, the Ames Project had two main challenges: (1) to develop a method for the production of pure uranium metal in large quantities, and (2) to develop a procedure for large-scale casting of the metal.

By early August 1942, the Ames Project scientists had found a way to successfully produce pure uranium in large amounts. In September, Dr. Wilhelm personally delivered an 11 pound ingot of pure uranium to the Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory. Later that week, the Ames Project had a $30,000 contract to produce 100 pounds of uranium per week for Chicago. They were to produce uranium for the Laboratory until such large-scale production could be taken over by industry.

After the nuclear chain reaction experiment was successful in Chicago, Ames needed to produce even more uranium for a larger reactor at Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Production was stepped up from 3,600 pounds per week in early January 1943 to almost 36,000 pounds per week in May of that year. Ames ultimately produced 90% of the uranium that went into the Clinton reactor.

Uranium production by the Ames Project decreased as industry took over, but overall the Ames Project produced more than 2 million pounds of uranium between 1942 and 1946.

In 1947, the United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) officially established the Ames Laboratory as a national laboratory. The contract for the operation of the laboratory was awarded to Iowa State University under its Institute for Atomic Research (IAR), the administrative body for Ames Laboratory, and Spedding was appointed as its first director. In 1968, Spedding stepped down as director and was succeeded by Robert Hansen until 1988. In 1974, the IAR became the Energy and Mineral Resources Research Institute (EMRRI), responsible for administering the laboratory until 1987.

In 1974, the U.S. AEC was split into two new agencies, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). The ERDA oversaw the work of Ames Laboratory and other national laboratories until 1977, when it was combined with the Federal Energy Administration to become the Department of Energy (DOE).

Ames Laboratory is currently a DOE research facility operated by Iowa State University. The Laboratory and University share facilities, functions, graduate students, and faculty/principle investigators.

After World War II, the Ames Laboratory specialized in rare metals and methods of achieving chemical transformation without the production of toxic waste. The Laboratory has expanded its scope beyond materials research, including research in photosynthesis, hazardous waste analysis, computer programming, quasicrystals, and nontraditional materials. Research programs in 2013 include Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences; Division of Chemical and Biological Sciences; Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering; Environmental & Protection Sciences; and Simulation, Modeling & Decision Science.

Collection description

This collection (1913-1987) contains annual summary reports, clippings, correspondence, directories, financial reports, memorandums, minutes, newsletters, pamphlets, personnel files, photographs, press releases, programs, publications, research reports, scientific papers, and speeches. It documents the administrative activities of the Ames Laboratory beginning with its participation in the Manhattan Project during World War II (1942-1946, as the Ames Project) and continuing from its establishment as an official national laboratory in 1947. The records related to the Manhattan Project include personnel files, newspaper clippings documenting the dropping of the atomic bombs in August 1945, correspondence, scientific reports, weekly staff reports, and reports from the Metallurgical Project at the University of Chicago, under which the Ames Project research was conducted. Work done by Ames Laboratory after the Manhattan Project includes the General Electric Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (GE-ANP) project, commissioned by the U.S. Army Air Force, which included research on yttrium metal; thorium production; rare earth elements; and "Element 94," or plutonium. Also included are some files from Dr. Frank A. Spedding, Director of Ames Project beginning in 1941 and Ames Laboratory from 1947 to 1968, as well as scientific papers in Russian.

    Description of series

Series 2 Ames Laboratory 1913-1987, undated
    extent: 5.67 linear feet
description: This series contains correspondence, committee files, clippings, directories, financial reports, research reports, program proposals, annual summary reports, administrative reports, open house programs, and memorandums documenting the Ames Laboratory, officially founded in 1947. The bulk of materials are from the 1950s through the 1980s. Includes materials related to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). Also includes a group of files documenting Ames Laboratory's work on the General Electric Company's Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion project (GE-ANP). The series is arranged alphabetically.
