Historical note

Iowa State's Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) was formed in 1973 under the name Student Alumni Association (SAA) as an extension of the Iowa State University Alumni Association. SALC offers current ISU students the opportunity to participate in leadership roles responsible for sponsoring, planning and coordinating events for ISU students, alumni, the Ames community, and prospective students. The SALC Executive Committee currently oversees five committees: Cyclone Alley Central, Family Weekend, Homecoming Central, Senior Class Council, and Spirit.

From its inception the SALC, or what was then the SAA, provided a wide array of services to the students and alumni of Iowa State. The SAA helped with campus fund raising by holding Callathons and Bike Marathons, providing discounted travel services to students, and holding job fairs, promoting Iowa State by sending Student Ambassadors to visit high schools throughout the state, and having Cyclone Guides coordinate campus visits by prospective students.

In 2000, the Student Alumni Association was renamed Student Alumni Leadership Council. The SALC continues to provide support and coordination of various student activities on campus. However, also in 2000 an organization named the Collegiate Alumni Association changed its name to Student Alumni Association. The Collegiate Alumni Association was created in 1996 to introduce students to the benefits of membership in the Iowa State University Alumni Association. The SALC and the current SAA perform separate and distinct functions for the students of Iowa State.

 

Collection description

This collection contains news clippings, committee reports, publications, and photographs documenting members and activities of the Student Alumni Leadership Council. Also included are several scrapbooks which contain candid photos, fliers, brochures, and news clippings which document the organization's activities.
