Biographical note

Herbert Miller was born to Anthony and Mamie Miller on September 7, 1890 in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his B.S. (1913) in Civil Engineering from Iowa State College (University).

Miller was active in farm management,he invested in farm real estate and in several small businesses in Iowa. He was also the manager of water-works in the contracting department of Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company.

Miller was an active in the fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha in college and after graduation, working to keep the fraternity finances in order. In 1973, he and other members were instrumental in building a new chapter house at Iowa State University.

Miller was a member of the American Waterworks Association.

Miller died July 16, 1967.

 

Collection description

The collection (1911-1954, n.d.) contains newspaper clippings, farm reports, financial statements and correspondence. The papers document Miller's business dealings and his work with Pi Kappa Alpha (Iowa State College). In addition, there are some personal materials such as speeches and documents relating to his time at Iowa State. The collection also includes theater and musical programs and play bills from Des Moines, St. Louis, Chicago, and Minneapolis.
