Biographical note

Louise Odegaard graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. (1972) in forestry and outdoor recreation. Members of her family have been attending Iowa State since the 1880s, when her grandfather's aunt, May Thayer, was enrolled at the school. Louise's grandfather, Edward Thayer John, graduated from Iowa State with a B.S. (1916) in mechanical engineering. John was captain of the football team and was one of the founding members of the Delta Upsilon chapter at Iowa State. He met his wife, Lucille Irvin, at Iowa State. Lucille received her degree in home economics from Iowa State in 1917.

Edward T. and Lucille John had two daughters, Barbara Irvin and Pauline. Barbara Irvin John, Louise Odegaard's mother, received her B.S. (1942) in home economics from Iowa State. Barbara met her husband, Alf Thorson Odegaard, when they were seniors at Iowa State at a Dime Dance in the Memorial Union. Alf Odegaard received his B.S. (1942) and M.S. (1949) in agricultural education from Iowa State. Alf and Barbara were married in 1943 while he was on leave from the military. He served two years on a destroyer in the South Pacific during World War II.

Barbara and Alf Odegaard had four children, Judith, Susan, Louise, and John. Of those four, two attended Iowa State, Susan and Louise. Susan received her B.S. (1971) in elementary education and Louise graduated the following year in forestry and outdoor recreation. Both were members of Delta Zeta. Louise was also active in Stars Over VEISHEA and Varieties when not attending sporting events. More recently, Susan's two daughters, Jennifer (Class of 1999) and Katherine (Class of 2000), graduated from Iowa State University and were also members of Delta Zeta.

 

Collection description

This collection (1912-2004, undated) contains a large assortment of artifacts, newspaper clippings, programs, and other Iowa State memorabilia from two Iowa State graduates, Edward T. John and Louise Odegaard. Edward T. John graduated from Iowa State in 1916. Materials related to him include news paper clippings, various programs including some from Delta Upsilon and Tau Beta Pi, and football-related materials. Several items of John's can be found in the artifact collection, including his letter sweater and a football patch.

Louise Odegaard graduated from Iowa State in 1972 and her sister, Susan, graduated in 1971. The materials in this collection were donated by Louise, so most of the items from this time period represent her activities as a student at Iowa State. These materials include artifacts such a buttons and sorority pledge paddles, programs and passes for athletic events, Stars Over VEISHEA programs and photographs, and Delta Zeta composite photographs.
