Abstract

The first national fraternity was established at Iowa State University in 1875. The Greek community is governed by four councils: the Collegiate Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Members of the Greek community are advised by staff of the Office of Greek Affairs, a unit of Iowa State's Dean of Students Office. This collection contains meeting minutes, news clippings, promotional materials, publications, and reports related to Greek life at Iowa State University. These files document the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, Greek Week, Rush activities and other aspect of the Iowa State Greek community.

Historical note

The first national fraternity at Iowa State University, Delta Tau Delta, was organized in 1875. Two years later, Pi Beta Phi (organized as I.C. Sorosis) became the first national sorority to be established at Iowa State. In 1891, in an effort to eliminate conflict between Greek and non-Greek students, President William Beardshear effectively banned Greek organizations at Iowa State. His successor, President A. B. Storms convinced the Board of Trustees to lift the ban in 1904.

By 1961, an additional 34 fraternities and 13 sororities were established at Iowa State.  The Greek community at Iowa State is governed by four councils: the Collegiate Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Members of the Greek community are advised by staff of the Office of Greek Affairs, a unit of Iowa State's Dean of Students Office. Many of the chapters also receive support from Ames-area fraternity and sorority alumni councils.
