Historical note

In 1903, when Iowa State President Albert Boynton Storms lifted the ban on fraternities and sororities, twelve students formed a local fraternity known as the Dragon Society. Members met in homes around Ames until construction began on a chapter house at 2717 West Street, near the West Gate. In 1905, the Dragons Society petitioned the national fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity for a charter. SAE was originally founded in 1856 at the University of Alabama by Noble Leslie DeVotie, and is the largest fraternity in the United States. Though some in the national organization wondered if a "cow college" such as Iowa State would be suitable for a chapter of SAE, the charter was approved and on June 5, 1905, the Dragon Society subsequently became the Iowa Gamma chapter of SAE.

In 1927, Brother Lewis B. Maytag, who earned a BS in Engineering from Iowa State College (University) (1910), and the President of the Maytag Corporation in Newton, Iowa, offered a $6,000 challenge grant for Iowa Gamma to build a new chapter house. The alumni met Maytag's offer and, in the summer of 1928, construction began on a new house at 140 Lynn Avenue. Completed in the winter of 1929, at a total cost of nearly $45,000, the students of Iowa State called the stately new house, the "Maytag Mansion." The house originally housed twenty-eight men, a cook, and a housemother, but following the Second World War, when student enrollment skyrocketed, the house held nearly fifty men. Membership continued to grow throughout the 1950s and 1950s, and to manage the increase, an addition to the house was added in 1968. The house was completely renovated in 1997 following a capital campaign to raise $750,000.

Iowa Gamma was well known on campus for its creative parties and events, including the Paddy Murphy Party. Held every three years, the Paddy Murphy Party was a phony funeral for an alumni requesting he be buried on the front lawn. The most well known tale, however, occurred in 1949, when pledges euthanized an old horse in the living room as a pledge prank. Though the chapter was placed on probation, the prank immediately made local and national news, and continues to be a house legend.

In 1998, following several attempts to curb underage alcohol use and allegations of misconduct, Iowa Gamma became the first fraternities at Iowa State University to become an alcohol-free chapter. The transition to a dry house was a difficult one for members, but the decision earned the men of Iowa Gamma recognition for their leadership in alcohol-free housing.

Collection description

This collection (1903-[ongoing]) includes the scrapbooks of Iowa Gamma from the 1905 until the 1990s, as well as loose photographs from the 1900s until the 2000s. In addition to photographs, scrapbooks also contain dance cards, news clippings, wedding invitations, ticket stubs from sporting and fraternity events, and correspondence from members and the national chapter. One scrapbook was put together by the Little Sisters of Minerva, a women's organization associated with SAE, and another consists of journalistic photographs of a "Train Party" in 1953. Also included in the collection are two copies of the original 1905 petition from the Dragon Society to Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the membership scrolls, minute books, rush manuals, and documents related to the administration of Iowa Gamma between 1905 and 2004. Two leather folders that held the membership scrolls are located in the artifact collection.
