Historical note

The Iowa State University Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1911 with 29 charter members. Since its foundation, this honor society has maintained a vigorous program whose main goal is to enhance academic excellence and honor outstanding scholarship at Iowa State.

Louis B. Schmidt, creator of Iowa State's music department, was the first Secretary while Herman Knapp, Iowa State College Treasurer, was the first President. Louis Pammel was National Secretary and later served as Executive Director and President. Other charter members included Samuel Beyer, Robert Buchanan, Charles Curtiss, Anson Marston, and Edgar Stanton.

Since its foundation the society has held an annual initiation and banquet to induct new members. This event features distinguished speakers and is the main social event of the year sponsored by the society. Phi Kappa Phi highlights the academic excellence of Iowa State through a variety of activities including the initiation banquet, scholarships and awards, sponsored lectures, and other special events.

Phi Kappa Phi has held a leading role in the Council of Honor Societies at Iowa State since its conception. However during the 1940s membership was down due to the war and civil protest at American universities during the 1960s and 1970s prompted questions of the relevance of honor societies and their purposes. By 1966 membership in the Iowa State Chapter had grown again.

The society recognizes and honors students of good character, who have excelled in scholarship and will stimulate others to strive for excellence. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious national collegiate honor societies. Juniors must be in the top 7.5 percent of their class; seniors and graduate students must be in the top 10%. Today there are chapters on almost 300 college campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
