The Iowa State University Women's Softball program played for the first time in 1974. The early years were successful for the Cyclones as they won two Big 8 titles (1976, 1978).

Iowa State was invited to play in the post-season National Invitational Championships, winning four games before falling twice and ending their run (1987). Iowa State also appeared in the top 20 of the national rankings for the first time (1987). In addition, Coach Deb Kuhn was named Big 8 Coach of the Year (1987). The Cyclones played in their first NCAA tournament the following season (1988), dropping their first two games in the double-elimination format.

Playing in the Big 12 has proven to be difficult for Iowa State. The team has not won more than six conference game in any season since the start of the Big 12 (1996). The most wins overall in a single season since the start of the Big 12 is 29 (2008).

The Iowa State Softball program has an overall record of 743-693-5 through the 2008 season.
