Men's Intercollegiate Golf at Iowa State began under the direction of Coach Hugo Otopalik (1931). Coach Otopalik was also the head coach of Wrestling at Iowa State during this time. During the Otopalik era, Iowa State had many excellent golfers and successful teams. Another notable coach for the Iowa State Golf program was Coach Dale Anderson whom coached the Cyclones for thirty successful years (1969-1999). Currently, Jay Horton coaches the Golf team. Horton's teams have continued the successful tradition of Iowa State Golf. In 2001, Horton's team claimed the Big Four Championship. Horton's teams are excellent on the course and in the classroom. During the Horton era, the Golf team had three Academic All-Americans in Aaron Patton (2000), Kevin Oswald (2002), and Greg Stephanson (2002).

In 1937, the Iowa State team began golfing on the college's new 18-hole golf course. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the course during the Great Depression. The George F. Veenker Memorial Golf Course, named after the Athletic Director whom worked hard to get the course started at Iowa State, was the home to all Iowa State Golf practices and home meets until the 2000 season. The team currently plays on the Harvester Golf Course in Rhodes, Iowa.
