Abstract

This collection contains general files of the Iowa State University Department of Architecture. The records include correspondence and program files related to state and local architectural societies, campus planning at Iowa State, proposals for design work, and research proposals.

Historical note

Courses in architectural engineering and structural design emerged from drafting and drawing coursework in the civil engineering curriculum at Iowa State College (University). In 1914, the Division of Engineering established a Department of Structural Design to meet the demand for trained architectural engineers and to develop a rural architecture program for the state. In 1918, the name of the department changed to the Department of Architectural Engineering and then to the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering in 1945. The name changed to its present form in 1967, the same year the department was included in the newly established Design Center, predecessor to the College of Design.

Allen H. Kimball was the first head of the department and served in this capacity for over 30 years. The department first offered courses for the Master of Architecture degree in 1965. The Department of Architecture was one of the original academic programs incorporated into the College of Design when it was organized in 1978.
