Abstract

Eino Olavi Kainlauri was a professor of architecture at Iowa State University from 1975 until 1992. His primary research focus was on community energy systems, the design of intelligent buildings, energy conservation, and solar energy. He served as the director of the Continuing Education Program in Architecture. This collection includes biographical information about Kainlauri along with many of his works including articles, conference proceedings, photographs, reports, sketches, and slides. These materials document Kainlauri’s research on atriums, community energy systems, daylighting, designing intelligent buildings, energy conservation, professional development, and solar energy.

Biographical note

Eino Olavi Kainlauri was born on June 13, 1922 in Lahti, Finland, to William Pöyhönen and Eva Kainlauri. He served as a first lieutenant in the Finnish Army during World War II and received a Medal and Cross of Liberty. He moved to the U.S. in 1947 to study architecture. He received a B.Arch. (1950), M.Arch. (1959), and Ph.D. in Natural Resources (1975) from the University of Michigan.

Before becoming a teacher, Kainlauri spent nerly two decades as a practicing architect in Michigan. He worked as a Dealership Facilities Specialist (1955-1956) for the Ford Motor Company in Livonia, Michigan. He was a Partner and General Manager (1956-1959) of Davis-Kainlauri and MacMullan Associates. He then was named President (1959-1975) of KMM Associates in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a practicing architect, he designed 73 school buildings, 45 churches, and many other buildings. Kainlauri's first foray into teaching was as a faculty member and senior research assistant (1973-1974) at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. He came to Iowa State University as an Associate Professor (1975-1977). He was named a Professor (1977-1992) and put in charge of the Continuing Education Program in Architecture. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1992.

Kainlauri received numerous awards and was a member of many organizations. He won a Merit Award (1962) in the church design contest sponsored by the National Association of Evangelists. He also won a School of the Month award (1965) from Nation’s Schools Magazine. He was a Senior Fulbright-Hayes Scholar in Europe (1973-1974) and later served as a Fulbright Research Scholar (1983-1984). He received the Knight of the Order of White Rose, 1st Class of Finland in 1993. Kainlauri was a member of the American Institute of Architects and in 1994 became a Fellow. He also belonged to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers, American Society for Testing and Materials, American Solar Energy Society, Intelligent Buildings Institute, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation.

Kainlauri married Genevieve Mobley of Sidney, Iowa, in 1949 and they had three children: John Stanford, William Eino, and Mary Ann. Kainlauri passed away on January 10, 2006.

Collection description

The collection (1951-2007, undated) documents Kainlauri’s professional life and includes articles, conference proceedings, correspondence, coursework, news clippings, pages from his architectural portfolio, photographs, reports, sketches, and slides. Biographical information includes certificates, photographs, resumes, and a story Kainlauri wrote about his experience serving in the Finnish Army during WWII.

The articles document Kainlauri’s research on atriums, community energy systems, daylighting, designing intelligent buildings, energy conservation, professional development, and solar energy.

The pages from Kainlauri’s portfolio include architectural drawings he made for businesses, churches, schools, and other organizations. Brochures advertising the buildings are included. Photographs and slides of the buildings are also in the collection.

One artifact is included in the collection. It is a name tag from when Kainlauri led the Michigan Youth Symphony on a tour of Finland in 1973. His daughter was a member.

Organization

The collection is organized alphabetically, except for biographical information located at the beginning.
