Abstract

Tahira K. Hira, professor of personal finance and consumer economics in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State University, was born in Pakistan. She was educated at Punjab University in Pakistan and at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She joined the faculty at Iowa State University in 1980. Hira currently serves as Assistant to the President at Iowa State and is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the field of consumer economics and financial literacy. This collection contains biographical information, published articles and proceedings, reports, and correspondence relating to Hira's work in the areas of consumer credit, financial literacy, bankruptcy, gambling, and family financial planning.

 

Biographical note

Tahira Khanam Hira was born in Pakistan. She received her B.A. (1963) and M.A. (1966) in economics at Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan. Hira continued her education in the United States where she received her M.S. (1973) in agricultural economics and Ph.D. (1976) in family economics and financial management at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

After Hira completed her studies she became an Assistant Professor (1976-1980) of Family Studies at the University of Manitoba, Canada. She joined the Iowa State University faculty as an Assistant Professor (1980-1984) of Family Environment (now part of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies). She was promoted to Associate Professor (1984-1988) and Professor (1988-present). Hira also served as Associate Vice Provost (1998-2002) for ISU Extension and currently (2012) serves as Senior Policy Advisor to the President (2002-present) at Iowa State University.

Along with her work as a professor, Hira has published around 140 professional papers and book chapters and has presented at over 240 national and international meetings. Her research interests include consumer bankruptcy and consumer credit; financial beliefs and behaviors; gambling and bankruptcy; the impact of employer-provided financial education on employee financial well-being and loyalty; gender, age, and ethnic difference in investment behavior; and financial literacy in youth, college students, and the workplace.

During her tenure at Iowa State, Hira has been recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise in consumer economics and financial literacy. She was the Founding President (1984-1986) of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education and served as President (2001-2002) of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Hira has received numerous honors and awards for her work including the Research Excellence Award (1990) from the Japan Society of Household Economics, the Award for Faculty Excellence (1996) from the Iowa Board of Regents, the Faculty Citation Award (1996) from the ISU Alumni Association, and the Wilton Park International Achievement Award (1998). In 2008, President George W. Bush named her to the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy.

Tahira Hira met her husband, Labh Hira, while both were studying at the University of Missouri-Columbia. They married in 1975. Labh Hira, a professor of accounting, also served as Dean (2002-2012) of the Iowa State University College of Business.
