Historical note

WOI-TV was the first television station owned and operated by an institution of higher learning in the U.S., beginning in February, 1950. At that time, the station was the only one to televise a regular schedule of programming into central Iowa, until 1954. The station was truly unique in that as an educationally owned television station, WOI-TV was also granted a commercial license by the FCC.

WOI-TV's pioneering activities in applying television to education helped stimulate support for the institution of educational television across the United States. Iowa
State University was one of the first educational institutions to broadcast college-level courses, using WOI-TV as its outlet. WOI-TV is also historically noteworthy for its early experiments in Kinescope recording techniques, which the station used to film and distribute its locally-produced programming to other stations.

Iowa State University sold WOI-TV to Capital Cities Communications, Inc. (parent company of ABC Television) during 1994.

Martha Jane Dloughy Squire was employed by WOI-TV as staff artist (1952-1955) after graduating from Iowa State College (University) with a B.S. (1951) in applied art. Her responsibilities included designing the titles, credits, and promotional visuals used on WOI-TV for various productions.

Collection description

This collection (1953-1955, n.d.) consists of visual graphics from the 1950s used for WOI-TV programming. The visuals were all designed by Martha Dloughy Squire, WOI-TV's art director at the time. The visuals include special announcements for news bulletins and programs; promotional spots for WOI television and radio programming; promotional spots for individual Iowa State academic departments; promotional spots for the Iowa State Fair, the Iowa Boys State Basketball Tournament, and the Iowa State VEISHEA and homecoming celebrations; and television program titles and credits.

The visuals were constructed of paper and various media and pasted onto tagboard. They range in size from 6" x 7" up to 14" x 19". Almost all of them have notes written on the back, probably by Squire, describing the visual and what it was used for. Most of them have suffered from water damage resulting in warping.

The collection also contains three glass slides of television visuals created by Squire and a postal mailing label designed for WOI letters and envelopes.
