Biographical note

Julian C. Schilletter was born November 1, 1901 in Clemson, South Carolina. He earned a B.S. (1922) in horticulture from Clemson University, where he also played on the men's basketball team. In addition, Schilletter received an M.S. (1923) in horticulture and a Ph.D. (1930) from Iowa State College (University).

Dr. Schilletter began teaching at Iowa State as an Instructor (1923-1928) in the Horticulture Department. He was later promoted to Assistant Professor (1928-1936), Associate Professor (1936-1944) and Professor (1944-1946). Dr. Schilletter was also the Managing Director (1943-1946) of Iowa State University's Memorial Union. He accepted the position of Director (1946-1967) of Residence Halls and then served as a Resident Analyst (1967-1972) until his retirement.

During his years as Director of Residence at Iowa State, Dr. Schilletter established married student housing, the Men's Residence Association (MRA), the Women's Residence Association (WRA), and the residence hall house system. For his contributions, he received citations from MRA, WRA, Big 8 Housing Directors, Governor Harold E. Hughes, Faculty, and was awarded the Iowa State University Memorial Union Medal. The university named the student housing north of campus Schilletter Village Apartments in 1974, in honor of Dr. Schilletter.

Dr. Schilletter was a member numerous honorary societies and professional organizations, such as Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Alpha Zeta, American Men of Science, Association of College and University Housing Officers, and American Society for Horticultural Science.

Julian C. Schilletter died in Ames, Iowa on October 1, 2002.

 

Collection description

This collection (1904-2002, n.d.) contains correspondence, interviews, speeches, lecture notes, research materials, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Much of the material relates to Dr. Schilletter's work as a faculty member in the Horticulture Department and as Director of Residence at Iowa State University.
