Historical note

AOAC International was originally founded as the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists (AOAC) in 1884 and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  The initial charge of the organization was to formulate standard methods used to analyze fertilizers.  AOAC was officially established as an independent organization at a convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1885.

In 1965, the organization changed its name to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) to recognize the fact that the organization's scope of interest had expanded beyond agricultural topics.  In 1992, the name was again changed to AOAC International to reflect the growing international aspect of its membership and to reduce the emphasis on any one particular scientific discipline.  Prior to 1987, full voting membership was restricted to analytical chemists who were state and federal government employees.  Now, more than half of the membership is made up of industry scientists.

The first methods published by AOAC dealt only with fertilizers, but the work expanded into other areas such as animal feed and dairy products, and with the passage of the Food and Drug Act of 1906, to all foods and drugs.  As additional laws were passed by Congress and the States, the Association’s program covered pesticides (1910); cosmetics and extraneous material; evidence of insect and rodent attack of agricultural commodities (1938); additional pesticides (1954); food additives (1957); hazardous substances (1960); and drugs subject to abuse (1965).  In 1965, the AOAC expanded its programs in the microbiological area and the methods required for the control of air and water pollution.

The organization ’s research is published in the publication, Official Methods of Analysis of AOAC International.  The methods defined by this publication are used by Federal and State agencies in their regulatory work and are accepted by the courts as a source of valid methods of analysis to determine the legality of food and agricultural products and other commodities of interest to agriculture and public health. The methods are also used by industry to determine whether their products will comply with the law before they are introduced in the channels of trade and in contracts and specifications.

Collection description

This collection (1891-[ongoing]) contains records of AOAC International, including annual meeting materials, artifacts, biographical information, correspondence files, committee records, photographs, proceedings, programs, and publications.

Annual meeting records include abstracts, announcements, programs, and audio recordings of speakers.  A number of the annual meeting proceedings, along with many other AOAC International publications, can be found by searching the ISU Library catalog.

The collection also contains numerous committee files.  The contents of most of these files include correspondence, membership information, meeting minutes, and reports.  Some of the committees are joint committees with other societies, such as the Intersociety Relations Committee composed of members from AOAC, the American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS).  The collection contains correspondence with numerous national and international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and various governments on issues of food safety and pollution control.

AOAC International sponsors several awards, but its most prestigious award is the Harvey W. Wiley Award.  Named after one of the founding members of the organization, the award was established in 1956 and bestowed annually to a scientist or group of scientists who have made an outstanding contribution to analytical method development in an area of interest to AOAC International.  Biographical information and photographs related to some of the award winners are included in these files.

There are two appendices attached to the end of the finding aid.   Appendix I is a list of acronyms used throughout the finding aid and their corresponding meaning.  Appendix II is a list of manuals and materials published by AOAC that were removed from this collection and cataloged as part of the Special Collections book collection.  Other publications of AOAC International can be found by searching the ISU Library catalog.
