Historical note

Now called the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, the Plant Growth Regulator Society of America was created in January 1973 and became incorporated later that year. The Society was originally named the Plant Growth Regulator Working Group and was later changed (1982) to the Plant Growth Regulator Society of America. The Society changed to its current name (Plant Growth Regulation Society of America) in 1995.

The Society is a nonprofit, educational and scientific organization that promotes knowledge about plant growth regulation in the form of meetings and published papers. Members of the Society are interested in the use of chemicals to beneficially modify the growth and development of plants.

According to its Articles of Incorporation, the purposes of the Society are to:

Promote the development of knowledge about how synthetic and natural chemicals regulate the growth of plants
Publish and disseminate the results of meritorious research and other information of value pertaining to the regulation of plant growth.
Promote unity in education, governmental regulation, terminology, and other matters relating to plant growth regulation.
Foster high standards in education dealing with plant growth regulation.
Cooperate with organizations having interests similar and related to those of the Group.
Remain a scientific, technical, and educational organization which does not have an objective of financial gain.

The group continues to build relations with other related groups such as the American Chemical Society and the International Plant Growth Substances Association. The Society has held joint meetings with many of these groups to discuss new advances in technology and the modifying of chemical substances as related to plant development.

The Plant Growth Regulator Society of America is incorporated and based in Missouri.

Collection description

The collection (1962-1992, undated) contains correspondence, meeting materials (from annual meetings and committee meetings), directories, photographs, audiotapes, publications, and incorporation materials. Meeting minutes and agendas make up the bulk of the meeting materials. Most of the committee meeting materials those of the Steering Committee. Annual meeting materials include memoranda, programs, abstracts, papers, and articles presented at the meetings.

The correspondence is with members, officers, speakers, and visitors' bureaus. Most of the correspondence is between officers and members of the Society and members, but also includes correspondence with other people interested in the organization. Topics of the correspondence include annual and committee meetings, membership, finances, and the Plant Growth Regulator Bulletin. Correspondence with related organizations is also included.

Additionally, the collection contains information regarding the formation of the society in the form of by-laws, articles of incorporation, and a descriptive statement, as well as revisions of these documents. It also houses incorporation materials from the state of Missouri. These materials include: correspondence with secretary of state (James C. Kirkpatrick), annual registration reports, and revised articles of incorporation.

Finally, the collection contains photographs and audiotapes. The photographs are from annual meetings and of the Society's officers. The audiotapes contain lectures on chemical compounds.
