Biographical note

Germaine G. Guiot was born March 10, 1893 in New York City, New York. Dr. Guiot received a three-year certificate (1914) from the Sargent School of Education (Boston College), a B.S. (1925) and M.S. (1934) from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. (1940) from New York University.

Dr. Guiot began her career as a music critic (1914-1916) at Western State Teachers College (Kalamazoo, Michigan) and was promoted to Director of Physical Education (1916-1926). She accepted the position of Director of Physical Education (1926-1938) at the University of Southern California-Los Angeles. Dr. Guiot was also a visiting Professor at the University of Michigan (1924 and 1936) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1938). She joined the Iowa State College (University) faculty (1940) and was quickly promoted to Professor and Head of Women's Physical Education (1941-1958). While at Iowa State, Dr. Guiot taught physical education theory classes.

Dr. Guiot was a member of the Iowa Health, Physical Education and Recreation (IHPER,) the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AAHPER), the National Physical Education for College Women (NPECW), and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). She was also a member of Pi Lambda Theta.

Dr. Guiot organized the Girl Scout chapter in Kalamazoo, Michigan and directed the Ames chapter. She also participated in the Ames Red Cross chapter.

 

Collection description

This collection (ca.1897-1978, n.d.) contains Dr. Guiot's award certificates, biographical information, correspondence, news clippings, dissertation, and speeches she gave while on the faculty at Iowa State College (University). The collection also includes personal photographs of Dr. Guiot's youth and family. A highlight of the collection is the book she wrote, Student Teaching in Physical Education; there is also a copy of this in the Archives Books Collection, call number: GV363 G948s.
