Abstract

A native of Rockwell, Iowa, Larry H. Ebbers received his B.S. (1962) and his M.S. (1968) in agricultural education and his Ph.D. (1972) in higher education from Iowa State University. Ebbers joined the staff at Iowa State in 1965, serving as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Residence. He became Assistant Professor (1972) in the College of Education and eventually served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Professional Studies. Ebbers initiated several original programs, most notably the Leadership Institute for a New Century (LINC) in 1989, a program to help prepare women and minorities for community college leadership positions, and the Community College Leadership Initiative Consortium (CLIC) in 1995, focused on providing leadership development for upper-level community college administrators. This collection contains biographical information, materials related to conference programs Ebbers led, presentation materials on topics related to higher education, files regarding his work with Iowa community colleges, community college leadership program records, correspondence files, and other materials documenting his career at Iowa State University.

Biographical note

Larry H. Ebbers was born in Rockwell, Iowa, on June 17, 1941. He received his B.S. (1962) and his M.S. (1968) in agricultural education along with his Ph.D. (1972) in higher education all from Iowa State University. Ebbers began his teaching career as the vocational agriculture and physical science instructor (1962-1963) at Iowa Falls Community School District and followed that with a stint as the vocational agriculture instructor (1963-1965) at Spencer Community High School.

Ebbers joined the Iowa State University staff as an Administrative Assistant (1965-1967) to the Director of Residence. He was promoted to Assistant Director of Residence (1970-1972). Following the completion of his Ph.D., Ebbers was named Assistant to the Dean (1972-1976) and Assistant Professor and Student Classification Officer (1972-1975) in the College of Education. He was promoted to Associate Professor (1975-1981) and Professor (1981-2016) of Professional Studies in Education. Ebbers served as Chair of the Department of Professional Studies (1985-1992) and as Assistant Dean (1976-1984) and Associate Dean (1998-2000) in the College of Education. He retired in 2016.

Throughout his career, Ebbers was concerned with issues related to leadership in higher education. He taught courses on college organization and administration, curriculum development in colleges, college teaching, comprehensive community college, and student development theory. He initiated the Leadership Institute for a New Century (LINC) in 1989, a program designed for women and minorities preparing for community college leadership positions. In 1995, he started the Community College Leadership Initiative Consortium (CLIC) focused on providing leadership development for upper-level community college administrators. Ebbers originated the Latino/a Education Initiative Conference in 2012, an annual event that brings together national authorities on issues impacting Latina/o education.

Ebbers had a long association with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), an organization that supports those working in the student affairs profession. He served as President (1987-1988), Editor of the NASPA Journal (1981-1984), Program Chair of the National Conference (1992), and Director of Research and Program Development (1979-1981) for the organization. In recognition of his service to the association and his dedication to serving leaders in higher education, NASPA awarded him the Region IV Easy Distinguished Service Award (1977), the Regional Award for Distinguished Service (1990), the Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession (1991), and the Robert Shaffer Award for Excellence (1996) as a Graduate Faculty Member.

Ebbers received numerous other awards for his teaching and service. Iowa State University awarded him the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award (1976) and he received the Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1979) from the ISU Student Alumni Association. He received the Faculty Excellence Award (2001) given by the Iowa Board of Regents, and received the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice (2008). He received the Leadership Award from the American Association of Community Colleges and the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees named their Honorary Trustee Award after Ebbers in 2016. In recognition of his work to increase diversity in community college leadership and on campus, Ebbers received the Faculty Award for Diversity Enhancement from the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences in 2016.

Larry Ebbers married the former Barbara Smith and they had two children, Lori and Kimberly.
