Historical note

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) was organized in 1968 along with the founding of the College of Education at Iowa State University. The department provides opportunities for students and education professionals interested in graduate course offerings, career preparation programs, and basic and applied research in the field of education. Currently (as of 2011) the department offers advanced degrees in educational administration, higher education, and research and evaluation.

Prior to the formation of the College of Education, graduate programs in education were administered by the Department of Vocational Education. Doctoral work in education began in the 1930s with Iowa State's first Ph.D. in education being awarded in 1941. Under the guidance of Virgil Lagomarcino and Ray Bryan, graduate work in education increased substantially during the 1960s culminating in the creation of the College of Education. With the establishment of the new college came a five-year transition period in which departments were formalized. The Department of Professional Studies in Education was organized in 1968 and formally established as a department in 1973. The department was renamed the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 1998. Following the merger of the Colleges of Education and Family and Consumer Sciences the department is now (2011) an academic unit of the College of Human Sciences.
