Almon Homer Fuller was born to Edgar Stanley and Amanda Camp Fuller on December 29, 1871, at Camptown, Pennsylvania. He received his C.E. (1897) and M.S. (1900) in engineering from Lafayette College. He also earned a Master of Civil Engineering (1898) from Cornell University. He received the Doctor of Science degree (1936) from Lafayette College, and Iowa State College (University) conferred upon him the Doctor of Engineering degree (1955). Dr. Fuller served as Professor (1898-1917) of Civil Engineering and Dean of Engineering (1899-1917) at the University of Washington. In 1917 he left Washington to become Professor and Head (1917-1920) of Civil Engineering at Lafayette College. He joined the staff at Iowa State College (University) as Professor and Head of Civil Engineering (1920-1938). In 1938 he stepped down from administrative duties, but continued to serve Iowa State until 1957. Dr. Fuller's research interests were in field tests of bridges and buildings, the flow of concrete under continuous load, and impact on highway bridges. He co-authored the textbook Analysis and Design of Steel Structures (call no. TA684 F958a). Almon Fuller married Mary Gwendolyn Cook on August 6, 1913. They had two children: Gwendolyn and John. Almon Fuller died on March 31, 1961, in Des Moines, Washington. He is buried in Merryall Cemetery in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. |
