Abstract

Carl E. Ekberg, Jr. was Professor (1959-1988) and Head (1959-1985) of the Department of Civil Engineering at Iowa State University. He conducted research on prestressed concrete structures for highway and railway bridges and was involved with research on steel deck reinforced concrete floors. This collection includes biographical information, correspondence, meeting materials, news clippings, publications, and reports. The collection also contains documents related to many of the professional associations that Ekberg was affiliated including the American Concrete Institute, the American Railway Engineering Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. These materials consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, and reports. The collection also contains notes, drafts, and published reports related to Ekberg's research on prestressed concrete structures and steel deck reinforced concrete slabs.

Biographical note

Carl Edwin Ekberg, Jr., was born October 28, 1920, to Carl E. and Ruth Elizabeth (Olin) Ekberg in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received his B.C.E. (1943) in civil engineering, his M.S. (1947) in structural engineering, and his Ph.D. (1954) in civil engineering all from the University of Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1951, Ekberg was named Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at North Dakota State University. He was hired by Lehigh University, where he achieved the rank of Associate Professor (1956-1959). In 1959, Ekberg accepted an appointment as Professor (1959-1988) and Head (1959-1985) of civil engineering at Iowa State University. He retired as department head in 1985, but served in a teaching and research capacity until his full retirement in 1988. He was named Professor Emeritus.

Ekberg's research activities focused on the improvement of design criteria for structural concrete. At Lehigh, he conducted extensive tests to determine the feasibility of prestressed concrete for highway and railway bridges with particular emphasis on resistance to repeated loading. At Iowa State, he participated in the development of design criteria for concrete floors reinforced with cold-formed steel decking.

Ekberg was greatly respected by his peers. He was named a fellow of both the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute, and held memberships in several other professional organizations including the American Railway Engineering Association, the American Society of Engineering Education, the Iowa Engineering Society, the Osborn Research Club, and the University of Minnesota M-Club. He was also a member of Chi Epsilon, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi honor societies. He received the Outstanding Service Award (1985) from the Iowa Section of ASCE.

Ekberg married Dorothy Heley of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. They had four children: Carl III, Gretchen, Janet, and Thomas. Carl Ekberg, Jr. died on May 30, 2007, and was buried in the Iowa State University Cemetery.
