Historical note

The Agricultural Education Department at Iowa State College (University) introduced a four-year combined curriculum instruction in home economics education and agriculture (1917). The passing of the Smith-Hughes Law approved a curriculum for vocational teachers of home economics (1919). The Home Economics Division and the Vocational Education Department jointly administering the Department of Home Economics and Vocational Education, named the Home Economics Vocational Education.

Changed to the Department of Home Economics Education in 1928, the department first offered graduate work for the Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Home Economics Education in 1956. It became the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies in 1987. In 2001, this Department was combined with two others (Textiles and Clothing, and Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management) to form the Department of Apparel, Educational Studies, and Hospitality Management.
