Historical note

Marjorie Marie McKinley (1918-1988) was born September 5, 1918 in Hardinsburg, Indiana. She received a B.S. (1940) degree in institution management from Indiana University, an M.S. (1946) degree in institution management from the Teachers College at Columbia University, and a Ph.D. (1956) degree co-majored in institution management and home economics education with a minor in industrial engineering from Iowa State University.

McKinley worked as Associate Director (1941-1944) in the Vocational Training Department at Women's Educational and Industrial Union in Boston, Massachusetts. She then worked as a Dietitian (1944-1946) at Teacher's College Cafeteria in New York City. Afterwards she was employed as Acting Director (1946-1947) in the Vocational Training Department at Women's Educational and Industrial Union, Boston, and Instructor in Institution Management at Simmons College in Boston. McKinley joined the staff at Iowa State College (University) as Assistant Professor (1947-1957) in the Department of Institutional Management. She was promoted to Associate Professor (1957-1960) and Professor (1960-1982) and also served as Department Head (1961-1981). McKinley received the Faculty Citation Award (1974) and retired on May 31, 1982.

McKinley was a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Dietetic Association, American Home Economics Association, American School Food Service Association, and the Society for the Advancement of Food Service Research. Honorary societies in which she was a member include Beta Gamma Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Omicron Nu, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Lambda Theta. She published widely in related professional and industry journals.

McKinley passed away on December 19, 1988 in Ames, Iowa.

 

Collection description

This collection (1943-1988, undated) contains news clippings, correspondence, photographs and publications. Included in this collection is biographical information, certificates and honorary society's files. This collection also contains many of McKinley's research project files, along with published and unpublished writings on topics such as food service personnel, labor costs in food service, and Iowa restaurants.
