Kathleen K. Hickok was a professor of English and Women’s Studies at Iowa State University. The main focus of her studies was women’s literature, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Her scholarship also touched upon gender studies, lesbian studies, and multicultural women’s writing. This collection includes notes from the many classes that she taught, several essays and encyclopedia entries that she authored, and papers that she presented at conferences. |
Kathleen K. Hickok was born in 1946 in Kansas, though she lived in Louisiana for most of her childhood and adolescent years. Hickok received her B.A. (1968) in English literature from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana; her M.A. (1970) in English literature from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana; and her Ph. D. (1977) in Eighteenth-Century, Romantic, and Victorian English literature from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. Before coming to Iowa State, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Stetson University in Florida (1977-1979). Hickok was then hired as an Assistant Professor (1979-1984) at Iowa State and promoted to Associate Professor (1984-2001), and finally to Professor (2001-2012). She is currently retired (Fall 2012) after an extensive career where she taught over 40 classes, many of which she created and developed herself. Hickok was chair of the Women’s Studies Program (1984-1990, 1992-1994) and was successful at expanding the program at Iowa State. She developed and taught several Women’s Studies courses. She has been presented with several awards for her service, two of the most notable being the Carrie Chapman Catt Award (1992) and the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center Gender Equity Award (2009). Aside from being active in the Women’s Studies Program, Hickok was also involved with LGBT organizations on campus. She served as Dean of Students on the Advisory Board on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Student Services (1993-1997, 2002-2012). Hickok was not only noted for her services on campus, but also for her scholarly work as well. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Popular Culture, Victorian Poetry, International Journal of Women’s Studies, and Nineteenth-Century Literary Criticism. Hickok successfully published one book, Representations of Women: Nineteenth-Century British Women’s Poetry (1984). Finally, Hickok has presented papers and essays at conferences, including the National Women’s Studies Association Conference, the Modern Language Association Convention, the Society for the Study of Southern Literature, and the ISU Women’s Studies Conference. |
This collection (1971-2013, undated) contains biographical information, class notes, writings, essays, and conference presentations relating to Kathleen Hickok’s work. The majority of Hickok’s studies centers on feminism and women’s literature, particularly women’s literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Though some of Hickok’s work is about women writers typically studied by literary scholars, much of her work focuses on noncanonical writers. |
