Biographical note

William "Bill" F. Kunerth was born on October 18th, 1924 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He received his B.S. (1950) from the University of Wyoming and his M.S.J. (1952) from Northwestern University.

Bill Kunerth began working at ISU in 1957 as an instructor of journalism; he was promoted to Assistant Professor (1959-1964), Associate Professor (1964-1965), and Professor (1975-1988). During his career, Kunerth received several awards and honors including the first annual Rod Fox Award for Innovative Teaching (1980) and the Distinguished Service Award of the Iowa Newspaper Association (1987) an award given to long-time journalists honored for their contributions to the newspaper profession and their communities.

Kunerth participated Honorary and Professional organizations include: Sigma Delta Chi professional journalism society, honorary president, Des Moines chapter from 1973-1974 and Association for Education in Journalism. Kunerth's major undergraduate subject was editorial journalism, and graduate subjects were journalism business and management psychology.

He is married to Wilma Kunerth and they have four children: Jeffery, William, John and Myla.

 

Collection description

This collection (1949-2009, undated) contains news clippings, course materials, reports, correspondence, and publications. The papers include documents pertaining to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication such as historical information, alumni listings, newsletters, committee records, policies and reports. The collection also contains materials relating to the Iowa State Daily and a copy of Kunerth's reminiscence on the battle to open the records of the Iowa State University Foundation.
