Abstract

David Frame Cox (1931-2009) was a professor of animal science and statistics at Iowa State University from 1960 to 1997. Much of his early work was devoted to the study of swine and the effects of irradiation on swine. The collection contains biographical information; personal course work; notes from Cox's mentor, Cornell University Professor Charles Roy Henderson; reprints of articles written by Cox; course notes from Statistics 401, taught by Cox; and personal research notes.

Biographical note

David Frame Cox was born in 1931. He received a B.S. (1953) in animal husbandry from Cornell University where he worked with C.R. Henderson, an M.S. (1957) in animal breeding and genetics from North Carolina State University where he worked with Drs. Lush and Hazel, and a Ph.D. (1959) in animal breeding and genetics from Iowa State University where he worked with Richard L. Willham.

Cox joined the faculty at Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1960-1964) in animal science and was promoted to Associate Professor (1964-1969). He was the co-leader of the Atomic Energy Commission's project to study the effects of irradiation on swine. After 30,000 pigs had been studied, the project closed in 1970.

Cox then joined the faculty in statistics as an Associate Professor (1968-1969) and was promoted to full Professor (1969-1997). He taught upper level courses in statistics and was a consultant for the Agricultural Experiment Station. Cox received the Margaret Ellen White Award (1986) for excellence in the guidance of graduate students. He was also awarded the title of University Professor. He retired in 1997.

Cox was married with one daughter. He passed away in 2009.
