In 1965, Iowa State University began offering an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science through the collaboration between the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Electrical Engineering. In 1967, an undergraduate degree program in computer science was offered. The Department of Computer Science was officially established in 1969. The Department of Computer Science has research programs in several key areas of computer science including algorithms, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and computational biology, computational complexity, parallel and distributed computing, programming languages, software engineering, and theory of computation. The department also participates in interdepartmental programs such as Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Complex Adaptive Systems, and Neuroscience. As of 2003, the Department of Computer Science had approximately 18 full time tenure track faculty and several adjunct faculty and instructors. The department also had 40 resident Ph.D. students, 60 M.S. students, and approximately 750 undergraduate students. |
