Gerhard Tintner was born to Leopold and Karoline Tintner in Nuremberg, Germany, on September 29, 1907. He received his Ph.D. (1929) from the University of Vienna. He studied at the London School of Economics (1939) and held a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship (1934-1936) for which he studied at Harvard, Columbia, Chicago, Stanford, and the University of California at Berkeley. He also studied economics at the Institut Henri Poincaré in France and at Cambridge in England. Tintner was a staff member at the Austrian Institute for Trade Cycle Research in Vienna (1936) and was a Research Fellow at the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics (1936). Tintner joined the staff of Iowa State College (University) as Assistant Professor (1937-1939) of economics and mathematics. He was promoted to Associate Professor (1939-1946) and Professor (1946-1962) of economics, mathematics, and statistics. Tintner resigned from Iowa State University in 1962 and joined the staff of the University of Pittsburgh. In 1963, he accepted a position as Distinguished Professor of Economics and Mathematics at the University of Southern California. He accepted an appointment as Professor and Head (1973-1978) of the Institut fur Okonometrie, University of Vienna, a position he held until retirement. The main focus of Tintner's research was in economic theory and its relationship with statistics and mathematics. Between 1930 and 1960, he was a major figure in the econometrics movement which redefined the study of economics. His book, Econometrics, helped shape teaching programs in many countries. Tintner also authored several other books and numerous publications on this and related topics. During his time at Iowa State, Tintner served as consultant to the Office of Strategic Services (1942) in Washington, D.C., as Associate of the Office of European Economic Research (1943) in New York City, and as a statistician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (1944) in Washington, D.C. He was the recipient of a Ford Foundation grant (1956-1957) which allowed him to spend a year at the University of Vienna, Austria, as a visiting professor. Throughout his career Tintner traveled to numerous countries giving lectures and teaching seminars. Tintner was a fellow of the Econometric Society, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Statistical Association. He served as associate editor for several economics books and journals. Tintner held honorary memberships in Phi Beta Kappa and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He was the recipient of the John R. Commons Award (1969) given by Omicron Delta Epsilon, International Honor Society in Economics, and was also awarded the honorary degree of Doctor Rerum Politicarum Honoris Causa from the Friedrichs Wilhelm University in Bonn, Germany. Gerhard Tintner married Leontine Roosevelt Camprubi of New York City in 1941. Together they had one child, Phillip. Gerhard Tintner died November 13, 1983, in Vienna, Austria. |
This collection (1938-2002, n.d.) contains biographical information and published articles related to the career of Gerhard Tintner. Biographical materials include Iowa State University faculty information forms, news clippings, biographical sketches, and bibliographies. The collection also contains copies and reprints of many of Tintner's published research articles on econometrics and economic theory, a book review, and an untitled manuscript on probability and statistics. |
