Biographical note

Dennis R. Starleaf was born in Moline, Illinois, to Carl and Helen Starleaf on March 27, 1938. He received his B.A. (1959) in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, his M.A. (1960) in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. (1967) from Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Starleaf joined the Department of Economics at Iowa State University as an Instructor (1963-1964). He was promoted to Assistant Professor (1964-1968), Associate Professor (1968-1971), and Professor (1971-1998). He also served as Chair of the Department (1984-1994). Dr. Starleaf was an active member of the Graduate Faculty and successfully guided dozens of students through their graduate programs. He is currently Emeritus Professor in the Department of Economics.

Dr Starleaf's main research interests lie in the fields of monetary economics and macroeconomic theory. He published numerous articles and several times his research was submitted to United States Congressional hearings on economic policy. Due to his expertise on the demand function for money, Dr. Starleaf was invited to serve on the staff of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve (1973-1974).

In addition to his administrative and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Starleaf served on a number of university committees and with several national organizations. He chaired the International Studies Advisory Committee (1971-1972), was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Iowa State University Agricultural Foundation (1984-1994), served on the ISU Investment Committee (1988-1994) as well as many others. Outside of the University, Dr. Starleaf served as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance (1971-1973) and was on the External Review Board for the Journal of Behavioral Economics (1974-1978). He is a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association and the American Economics Association.

During his career, Dr. Starleaf was the recipient of numerous honors and awards. For his efforts as teacher and administrator he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Iowa State University (1979), the Faculty Citation from the ISU Alumni Association (1989) and the Iowa Regents Award for Excellence (1997). From the ISU Extension Service he received a Certificate of Recognition in Continuing Education (1982) and the Art Johnson Award for Excellence in Applied Social Sciences (1986). He also won the Faculty Service Award (1983) from the National Universities Continuing Education Association and the Gold Quill Award (1989) for outstanding journal article from the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

Dennis Starleaf married Elizabeth Compton and together they had two children, Katrina and Christopher. He currently resides in Ames, Iowa.
