Norman Frederick Cheville was Professor (1995-2004) and Dean (2000-2004) of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Prior to his work at Iowa State, Cheville served as a scientist at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. His research focused on livestock diseases, specifically pasteurella toxins, pathogenesis and cytopathology of brucellosis, and cell attachment uptake and trafficking of the Mycobacterium species. This collection documents Cheville's career as a research scientist and college administrator and includes copies of his published research on brucellosis and other livestock diseases, correspondence regarding books he authored, administrative files from his tenure as professor and dean at Iowa State, presentations, consulting files, and biographical information. |
Norman Frederick Cheville was born on September 30, 1934, in Rhodes, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University where he earned his D.V.M. (1959). Cheville continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he received his M.S. (1963) and Ph.D. (1964) in pathology. Following college, Cheville was employed by the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) in Ames, Iowa, for over 30 years (1963-1995). At NADC, he led a team that developed a vaccine for bovine brucellosis, also known as Bangs disease. Based on his work with this disease, he was selected by the National Academy of Science to explore brucellosis transmission in bison and elk around Yellowstone National Park (1997). Cheville came to Iowa State University as Professor and Chair (1995-2000) of the Department of Veterinary Pathology. He was appointed Dean (2000-2004) of the College of Veterinary Medicine where he served until his retirement. During his career, Cheville's research interests focused on pasteurella toxins, pathogenesis and cytopathology of brucellosis, and cell attachment uptake and trafficking of the Mycobacterium species. He authored over 200 articles and 10 books on livestock diseases. He has held memberships with several professional organizations, including the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, the International Academy of Pathology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Phi Zeta, and Sigma Xi. Cheville married Beth M. Clark (1958) and together they had five children: David, Julie, Carol, John, and Anne. |
