Abstract

Stanley R. Johnson (1938- ) (economist) received a B.A. (1961) in Agricultural Economics from Western Illinois University, a M.S. (1962) in Agricultural Economics from Texas Technological College, and a Ph.D. (1966) from Texas A&M University. At Iowa State, he was a Professor of Economics (1985-1996), Director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) (1985-1996), and Vice Provost for University Extension (1996-2005). The collection contains correspondence, project reports, trip reports, budgets, proposals, survey data, project files, presentation files, and a committee file. It documents Johnson’s years as the Director of CARD, particularly his involvement in international projects such as the establishment of U.S. Agribusiness Centers in Iowa's Sister State of Stavropol, Russia, and in Ukraine following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Other international projects represented in the collection include those in former Soviet Union countries such as Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, as well as Australia, Egypt, Israel, Indonesia, and Jamaica.

 

Biographical note

Stanley R. Johnson was born August 26, 1938, in Burlington, Iowa. He received a B.A. (1961) in Agricultural Economics from Western Illinois University, a M.S. (1962) in Agricultural Economics from Texas Technological College, and a Ph.D. (1966) from Texas A&M University.

Johnson was employed as Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri (1964-1966), Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Connecticut (1966-1967), Associate Professor of Economics and Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri (1967-1970), and a Professor of Economics and Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri (1970-1985). At Iowa State University, he was employed as Professor of Economics (1985-1996), and named Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor (1990). He was also the Director of ISU's Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) from March 1985 to September 1996. CARD is an internationally recognized multi-disciplinary public policy research organization that focuses on agricultural and trade policy, food and nutrition policy, rural and economic development policy, and environmental and natural resource policy.  Later he served as Vice Provost for University Extension (1996-2005).

Johnson is a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association. He is also a Foreign Member of the Former Soviet Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Russian Academy of Agricultural Science, the Ukraine Agricultural Academy of Science, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is Honorary Professor of the Center for Rural Development Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Honorary Professor of the National Ukrainian Agricultural University. He has received the American Agricultural Economics Association Award for Outstanding Policy Contribution, the ISU Wilton Park International Service Award, the International Honor Award of the Office of International Cooperation and Development, United States Department of Agriculture, and the Hall of Fame Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. He has an Honorary Doctorate from Western Illinois University and Alumni Awards from Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University.

 

Collection description

The collection (1983-1997, undated) contains correspondence, project reports, trip reports, budgets, proposals, survey data, project files, presentation files, and a committee file. It documents Johnson's years as the Director of CARD, particularly his involvement in international projects such as the establishment of U.S. Agribusiness Centers in Iowa's Sister State of Stavropol, Russia, and in Ukraine following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Other international projects represented in the collection include those in former Soviet Union countries such as Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, as well as Australia, Egypt, Israel, Indonesia, and Jamaica. The collection also includes a few files for presentations given by Johnson at professional meetings and one file for the Strategic Planning Committees for the Economics and Sociology Departments at ISU.
