Abstract

Mary H. Morton of Rockwell City, Calhoun County, Iowa, was a founding member of the Lake Creek Go-Getters when it was established in 1925. Morton suffered from polio at a young age and conducted all of her 4-H activities from a wheel chair. She quickly assumed leadership responsibilities, serving as secretary-treasurer (1925-1926) during the club's first two years. She later served as club president (1930) and county president (1929). She also served as the secretary and treasurer (1930-1931) of the State 4-H Clubs. This collection contains a 4-H record book, a newspaper clippings scrapbook, and a personal expenses record book. The 4-H record book was assembled by Morton for the State 4-H Record Book Contest and includes letters of recommendation, project record books, essays, club programs, lists of personal and club activities, photographs, and newspaper clippings. The newspaper clippings scrapbook contains articles regarding 4-H activities in Calhoun County and statewide. Photocopies of these newspaper clippings are included in a separate folder.
